We Smile Back

'I love me and I love my smile'

We Smile Back was born in 2021, when Teddie first visited Nicaragua to support families living in rural communities with oral health prevention education. A four-week stay turned into a six-month voluntary venture where teaching teeth preservation became part of a Positiviteeth movement. After six months on the road, Teddie knew that this was her future, so she quit her job and travelled back to England to reorganise her life, ready for her return to Nicaragua in 2022. It was upon her return that she discovered it was not possible to continue with the work she had set out to do. She fell very sick and moved into a Spanish School, which is where she met her husband Félix.

We Smile Back was placed on pause, and it was in late 2022, when moving into Félix's jungle home, that she was asked by family members if she could teach the children English. This was not a topic Teddie had taught before, but she decided to support as it was something the children could benefit from, so English class commenced at the back of their house, where the only shelter available could house around seven children. With time, Teddie began to get her spark back for teaching and decided to experiment by including oral health education into the English classes. We Smile Back had evolved, and the children were now learning to speak a new language with their mouths whilst simultaneously learning how to love and care for it.

In 2024, Teddie and Félix were both teaching at the back of their house, but other children visited to ask if they could come to learn. It was in this uncomfortable moment of turning them away due to not enough space that they decided it was time to build a larger area to accommodate more children. A fundraising page was created, and with the support of others, they were able to start raising funds to build the We Smile Back space. This project is now underway thanks to all those who joined team #WSB.

Positiviteeth

Teddie believes in the magic of words and the uplifting, joyful healing that can occur through music and singing. Before leaving for Nicaragua in 2021, she wrote the song Positiviteeth that became an integral part of the oral health care clinics. Positiviteeth was debuted in Spanish in Nicaragua, and in early 2022, Teddie went into the studio and recorded it in both Spanish and English, placing it in popular music streaming channels such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube so that everyone and anyone could dance, brush and sing along.

Positiviteeth is now the official We Smile Back song, with oral health teachings and joy intertwined into every lyric. We hope that you can come along and sing with us!
